“At a time when hate and intolerance have become a common theme of political discourse, Sackett's work is as important as ever. After watching just a few seconds of the dancers' hypnotic motions, it becomes perfectly clear that the formulaic image of the defenseless, oppressed woman beneath the hijab is, in many cases, pure fallacy.”

Amirah Sackett & MR MiC

Muslim-American Identity Through Hip-Hop Dance

Amirah Sackett is an internationally recognized hip-hop dancer, choreographer and teacher widely known for her viral video “We’re Muslim, Don’t Panic.” Amirah has been a TEDx speaker and performed and taught in both Bangladesh and Malaysia through the U.S. Embassy as a cultural diplomat. She continues to tour, teach, and perform around the country to break misconceptions about Muslim women and Islam. Amirah will perform with Ahmed Zaghbouni, aka MR MiC—a beatboxer, musician, voice impressionist and film director from Tunisia. MR MiC represented his country in the 2019 World Championship of Beatboxing, and, later that year, he collaborated with Amirah on a series of videos, “Beatboxing Meets Popping.” These two Muslim artists, bonded by faith and their love of hip-hop, offer a counter narrative to the mediaʼs portrayal of Muslims.

Funded in part by the New England States Touring program of the New England Foundation for the Arts, made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts Regional Touring Program and the six New England state arts agencies.
