A new Congolese dance band is born in NYC (and our ears perk up at Laudable Productions!). Loboko is a brand new project headed by Hampshire College grad Morgan Greenstreet, featuring young star Yohni Djungu-Sungu (Soukous Stars, Zaiko Langa Langa). Drawing on the richness of Congolese musical history and the multi-cultural diasporic experience of life in New York City, Loboko creates a raw contemporary sound that inspires non-stop dancing.
Not all Planetary Parties are fundraisers, but for this one we're raising money for the Welcome Home Refugee Resettlement Program to support arriving refugee families to rebuild their homes in our community. Their generous work has supported the successful resettlement of 78 Congolese refugees in the past five years (as well as many more refugees from other countries). And that deserves a party. 🎉🎉🎉

The Planetary Party in 2020 is made possible by Spin That Records! — a vintage vinyl record shop in Springfield that also sells and repairs turntables and receivers, owned by local music enthusiast Giovanny Zuniga.

Big Lazy dwells in the landscape of gritty yet gracefully crafted American music. Simultaneously noir and pastoral, gothic and modern, the trio conjures images from big sky country to seedy back rooms. The band has flourished for 20 years in the super-talented, non-commercial strata of New York’s music scene, playing its singular brand of noir and twang with a filmic sensibility. Founder Stephen Ulrich is the composer for the HBO series Bored to Death.
Since their Valley debut at Barbes in the Woods last Summer, Big Lazy released a phenomenal new full-length called “Dear Trouble”, featuring such NYC luminaries as Marc Ribot, Steven Bernstein, and Peter Hess (of the Phillip Glass Ensemble).
We’re thrilled to be presenting them at New City Brewery for the first time this April for an entire evening of their gritty and deeply atmospheric music. Two sets starting at 8PM.
“...stunningly beautiful music that evokes everything from truckers' romps to the haunting film scores of Bernard Hermann.” -New Yorker
“Avant twang, Americana noir, garage chamber music, whatever you’d like to label [Big Lazy]... one thing is undeniable — the vibe is unforgettable.” -Culture Catch
“...The Big Apple crème de la crème: an instrumental trio that doesn't so much balance Jazz dexterity and rock aggression as stick 'em both in your ear.” -Village Voice
IF YOU LIKE: Surf, Twang, Reverb, Charlie Hunter, John Scofield, Marc Ribot. Noir film scores.
