MacArthur Genius and Doris Duke Artist Award recipient, Regina Carter began studying the violin at the age of 4 using the Suzuki method. She is rightfully considered jazz’s leading violinist but the scope of her art transcends cultures and genres. A winner of multiple DownBeat and JazzTimes readers’ and critics’ polls, Carter tours with her own group and has performed as a guest soloist with Mary J. Blige, Joe Jackson, Billy Joel, Dolly Parton and many others. The 2018 Grammy nominee trained at the New England Conservatory of Music and, among her many ventures, taught violin for the public school system in her hometown of Detroit as well as on a U.S. military base in Germany.
Since the release of her eponymous debut album in 1995, Carter has released eight studio albums showcasing her talent and versatility as a musician and performed at numerous jazz festivals. A winner of multiple readers’ and critics’ poll awards from DownBeat, JazzTimes, and others, Regina tours with her own group and has appeared frequently as a guest soloist. Making her home in an artistic territory without borders, a Regina Carter concert is an unpredictable and exhilarating journey.
